Our Mission
People with disabilities have the right to proper accessibility, safety, fair treatment, and equitable opportunities for success in our communities. It’s our kuleana (responsibility) to protect the civil rights of individuals with disabilities in Hawaii.
Since 1977, the Hawaii Disability Rights Center (HDRC) has worked to protect and promote the rights of residents with disabilities by providing information, outreach, education, and advocacy.
If you are living with a disability in Hawaii, we are here to help. HDRC has the authority, under federal law and the Protection and Advocacy for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities (PADD), to assist you with the following:
- Advance Health Care and Assistive Technologies
- Employment – Accommodations, Discrimination, VR disputes
- Housing – Accommodations, Discrimination, Section 8 disputes
- Health Care – Care and Treatment, Vaccine Access
- Powers of Attorney – for health care decisions and Education decisions
- Social Security – Return to Employment, Accommodations, Representative Payee matters
- Special Education – IEP/504 advocacy
- Voter registration and accessible voting
