Advocacy, Legal Representation & Systematic Casework
If you need help solving a problem, HDRC provides advocacy for individuals with disabilities who meet the eligibility criteria of one of our programs.
If you are an eligible person with a complaint, HDRC can intervene on your behalf with authorized consent. HDRC provides three levels of individual casework:
- Technical Assistance in Self-Advocacy (TASA)
TASA is advice and assistance from an HDRC advocate, such as counseling, reviewing information, or explaining service delivery systems. Clients are empowered to resolve their problems under the guidance of our advocate.
- Short-term Assistance (STA)
STA is advice and assistance that may include information review, investigation, counseling a client on intervention options, and/or staff intervention on behalf of a client to resolve an issue, with short-term monitoring.
- Comprehensive Advocacy
Comprehensive Advocacy addresses issues requiring negotiation, mediation, or other specialized intervention strategies by an HDRC advocate or attorney. If advocacy isn’t effective, legal remedies or action may be necessary.
HDRC staff attorneys can provide legal representation for clients in court processes concerned with rights, grievances, or appeals of such rights or grievances. HDRC also works on cases that affect changes in policies and practices impacting people with disabilities.
